WHATMAN VINTAGE PAPERS
The Turkey Mill was established in 1740 by James Whatman. Within a few years, the "J. Whatman" watermark had spread so quickly throughout Europe that other papermakers were forging it in order to profit from the sale of imitation Whatman. The papers were used in the 19th and 20th centuries by prominent watercolorists such as John Constable, William Blake, J. W. Turner and Winslow Homer. The production of handmade and mouldmade papers that followed these earlier traditons ended in 1962 when the Springfield Mill closed.
