Hand papermaking in Arches and Archette can be traced back to 1492 where papermakers took advantage of the pure waters of the Rue de Razon. Today, Arches papers are made on cylinder mould machines by the Arjomari Paper Group, now part of a largerconglomerate calledArjo-Wiggins.
The name ARJOMARI is derived from the first two letters of the following papers: Arches, Johannot, Marais and Rives - signifying that the reputation of their papers is the result of fine traditons developed by these mills, their specific style of papermaking and the people who helped to shape them over the centuries.
All Arjomari papers are made of 100% cotton, have two natural deckled edges and two torn edges, and are neutral pH.

ARCHES MBM INGRES (MICHALLET)
Originally designed by the mill for the artist Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, this type of paper set the standard for charcoal and pastel drawing and has been duplicated by many other mills around the world. Michallet was the name given to a heavier version of this sheet that was prized by many artists, including George Seurat. Although Michallet is no longer made, the rougher surface of the 105 gsm. sheet replicates the original. The letters "MBM" refer to the owners, Morel, Bercious and Masure who introduced the first mouldmade machines in 1883.
