Unryu is one of the most popular papers from Japan, so much so that other countries have adopted the name as their own. It has come to represent an almost generic term. "Unryu" translates as "dragon paper"  which refers to the long, cloud-like swirls from which dragons are said to emerge; dragons are harbingers of good fortune in Asian tradition, and as such for Japan, its dragon lore originated in China. 

The swirls which define Unryu paper are actual strands of unbeaten kozo fibers which are purposely "unpulped" so  that they may float onto the finished sheet when dry. Unryu paper can be tissue thin or thick enough to support a print. The long fibers are usually made of kozo, but in some cases, they will be of gampi or hemp. 

Unryu paper can be found not only in Japan, but in Thailand and other parts of the Asian continent.

AKAUNRYUSHI - handmade of 100% gampi. Sheer, translucent pastel color sheets embedded with small, saffron flowers and kozo threads. No deckles.

GAMPI UNRYUSHI - machine made from 100% gampi. Smooth, natural toned background that has a lustrous surface with inclusions of gampi bark. # 1 has small flecks of brown fiber; # 2 has flecks and longer pieces and # 3 has bold swirls of black and brown bark. 2 deckles.

UNRYU - handmade from kozo and sulphite pulp. Lightweight with long silky fibers. White with 4 deckles; neutral pH.

UNRYU # 60 with GOLD & SILVER - handmade from 100% kozo. Tissue weight with long kozo fibers and flecks of gold and silver leaf. White with 4 deckles. Neutral pH.
