CHINA

CHINA IS CREDITED WITH THE INVENTION OF PAPER

The magical substance was so highly prized by the emperor that the secret of its manufacture was closely guarded, in order that mere mortals would be unable to possess this amazing creation. Fortunately, for the rest of the world, the technique eventually spread all over China and was later learned by the Japanese, who in turn, also became great masters.

China and Japan were responsible for the spread of papermaking throughout the East - into Korea, Southeast Asia, Nepal, Northern and Southern India and like the spice and silk trades, into the Western World.

Although fine papermaking has continued in China since its invention, very little Chinese paper has been exported until recently. As trade with China continues to grow, we are beginning to see the diversity and range of these interesting and beautiful papers.

AN-JING HANDMADES

These sheets from the Zian County of Anhui Province are made following papermaking traditions that have been handed down for over 1000 years. Highly regarded throughout China as some of the finest papers available, An-Jing papers utilize locally grown bast fibers such as mulberry, blue sandalwood, hemp and dragon whisker grass. All sheets are neutral pH.

AN-JING CLEAN BARK - made from 100% blue sandalwood (bast) fiber. These sheets got their name from the preparation of the fibers where dark, outer bark has been carefully removed, resulting in unbleached sheets with pure, clean tonalities and sheet formation. Prized for sumi-e painting, the 20 gram sheet is available with or without sizing. Sized sheets will hold a crisper line with less bleeding. Off-white; no deckles.
